Unit Conversion in Decimals

Unit conversion in decimals:  Whenever we are supposed to convert a quantity given in one type of unit to another unit of the same type we will follow the following steps

For example we are supposed to convert 45 paise into rupees

Step 1: Use the relation between the two units. In this example we know that  100 paise = 1 Rupee

Step 2: We will find the fraction. In this example we will find the equivalent fraction for 1 paise.

               1;paise= frac{1}{100};Rupee= 0.01; Rupee

Step 3: We will multiply the value with the fraction or the decimal equivalent. In this example we will multiply 45 with the decimal equivalent that is 0.01

               45 paise = 45 X 0.01 Rupee

                            = 0.45 Rupee

Conversion Table:

TypeConversion Relation
Money Value 1 Rupee = 100 Paise
Length

 1 Km = 1000 m

 1 m = 100 cm

 1 dm = 10 cm

 1 cm = 10 mm

Weight

 1 Kg = 1000 gm

 1 gm = 1000 mg

Illustration: Convert 3 km to m (3 kilometers to meters).

Solution: There are 1000 m in 1 Km, so the conversion is easy, but let's follow a system.

Step 1:  1 Km= 1000 m

Step 2: This step is not required as In this case as we know the conversion for 1 Km.

Step 3:  3 Km = 3 X 1000 m

                      = 3000 m

Illustration: Convert 7 gm into Kg (7 gram to Kilogram).

Solution: There are 1000 gm in 1 Kg, so the conversion is easy, but let's follow a system.

Step 1:  1000 gm = 1 Kg

Step 2: Find the equivalent fraction for 1 gm.

  1;gm= frac{1}{1000};Kg= 0.001; Kg.

Step 3:  7 gm = 7 X 0.001 Kg

                      = 0.007 Kg
